Requirements
- Have strong experience in Computer Science principles such as OOD, Distributed Systems, Algorithms, Search and Information Retrieval and Operating Systems
- Experience in writing well documented code in object oriented language such as Java
- Two (2) plus years of software engineering and product development experience
- Development experience with Java in combination with web-technologies (e.g. servlets, JSP, JNDI, EJB, JDBC, security etc)
- Familiarity with open-source technologies like GIS, web-crawling, scraping, search and index, geo-spatial web would be a big plus
- B.S/M.S/PhD degree in Computer Science of related fields, or equivalent experience


Technical Skill Sets Illustration
We are currently writing product and system specifications so do not, at this stage, wish to be too prescriptive about specific technical skills. The afore-mentioned emphasis on core engineering strengths and personality are of most importance to us since people with these attributes will easily be able to adapt to technologies that are new to them. The following is an indication of what we seek and we would like to profile candidates' strengths in these areas.
- Full software-development life-cycle experience (inception, requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment)
- Java (and maybe C++) in combination with web-technologies (e.g. servlets, JSP, JNDI, EJB, JDBC, security etc)
- Open-source technologies (web-crawling, scraping, search and index, geo-spatial web, shopping, load-balancing etc)
- Design in UML
- XML, HTML, RDF, RSS 1.0, Atom etc.
- Relational databases (e.g. MySQL)
- Unix, Linux, Microsoft platforms (with basic administrative knowledge)
- Software testing methods
- Software development methods and processes

Digital Earth is building a world-class data, information and community platform for the International energy industry. This industry represents 3 to 5% of the global economy but is still relatively untouched by already proven Web 2.0 search and collaboration technologies. Your challenge, as a Digital Earth employee, will be to deal with the huge amounts of industry data stored with academic institutions, government organizations, commercial data vendors and national data repositories while at the same time building algorithms and data intelligence to crawl, categorize and geospatially categorize the unstructured web of information on the internet (as well as proprietary intranet networks). This combination of structured energy data, vertical-specific internet search, and user-generated content will become the definitive repository of energy sector information.

Company: Digital Earth Inc. is an International (Cayman Islands-based) company founded by experienced professionals from the Energy Information and Internet industries. The company’s initial operational base will be in Shenzhen (where the Chairman and CFO are already based).
